Hot! US Strikes 2 Iranian Revolutionary Guard Facilities in Syria

The US military attacked two facilities in eastern Syria used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups. The strikes were in response to attacks by pro-Iranian militias on US military positions in Iraq and Syria.
As reported by AFP on Friday (27/10/2023), the US attack on Iranian Revolutionary Guard positions in Syria was revealed by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a statement on Thursday (26/10) local time.

These precision self-defense strikes are a response to an ongoing and largely unsuccessful series of attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria carried out by Iranian-backed militia groups beginning October 17, Austin said in his statement.

In his statement, Austin also mentioned that a US contractor died of a heart attack during the pro-Iranian militia attack. About 21 other US military personnel, Austin said, suffered ‘minor injuries, but all have returned to duty’.

The strikes in Syria followed a direct warning, on Thursday (Oct 26) morning, from US President Joe Biden to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei regarding attacks on US positions in the Middle East region.

There was a direct message delivered. That’s as far as I can tell, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told local reporters, but declined to explain how the message was delivered.

In his statement, Austin sought to distance the attack on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard facility in Syria from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip over the past three weeks.

These specifically designed self-defense strikes were intended solely to protect and defend US personnel in Iraq and Syria, he said.

They are separate and distinct from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and do not constitute a change in our approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict, Austin emphasized.
